Detroit Lakes Man Charged With DWI After Traffic Stop

Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Detroit Lakes man is facing a gross misdemeanor DWI charge after a June traffic stop in Becker County.

According to court documents, Michael Ray Bonaime, 76, of Detroit Lakes, was charged in Becker County District Court with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The charge stems from an incident reported on June 7, 2026. Court records state the offense involved an aggravating factor because of Bonaime’s prior DWI history.

Traffic Stop Led To DWI Investigation

According to the criminal complaint, a vehicle was observed traveling after 9 p.m. without headlights or taillights.

The vehicle was stopped, and the driver was identified as Michael Ray Bonaime.

During the contact, officials reported Bonaime had difficulty removing his driver’s license from his wallet.

The complaint states he also had glassy eyes and admitted he had consumed several alcoholic drinks.

A records check showed Bonaime previously had a DWI-related license revocation in 2019.

The complaint states that Bonaime was asked to complete field sobriety testing. Due to his use of a cane, only a limited test was attempted.

Breath Test Results Reported

According to court documents, a preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of .118.

Bonaime was then arrested and taken into custody.

The complaint states he was provided attorney access and read the Minnesota breath test advisory.

Officials reported that a later breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of .10.

Minnesota law considers driving with an alcohol concentration of .08 or higher illegal.

Court Case Information

Bonaime is charged under Minnesota Statute 169A.20.1(1), with reference to 169A.26.2.

The charge is classified as a gross misdemeanor.

If convicted, the offense carries a possible maximum sentence of up to 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

Court records indicate the case is filed in Becker County District Court under Court File Number 03-CR-26-1119.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
