DETROIT LAKES (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bemidji man faces three charges following a traffic stop involving a modified pickup.

Daunte Robert Curry Lesetmoe, 25, is accused of failing to provide proof of insurance. He also faces allegations involving unsafe equipment and overly dark window tint.

The allegations appear in a Becker County District Court complaint.

Lifted Truck Stopped on Highway 34

The complaint says an officer spotted a black 2007 GMC Sierra heading east on Highway 34.

The stop happened around 3:11 p.m. on August 19, 2026, in Detroit Lakes.

The officer noted a raised front bumper, a lift kit, and tires extending beyond the fenders. The truck’s windows also appeared darker than Minnesota law allows.

The officer believed the modifications could pose safety risks for other drivers. The complaint describes possible crash damage and flying road debris from uncovered tires.

These concerns support the unsafe equipment allegation.

Insurance Check Raises Questions

Lesetmoe could not show proof of insurance during the stop, according to the complaint.

He told the officer his girlfriend insured the pickup. The officer allowed more time, but Lesetmoe could not obtain proof at the scene.

He was asked to send insurance records within 10 days.

On August 20, Lesetmoe emailed an insurance card listing the pickup under another person’s policy.

The card displayed policy dates from April 26 through October 26, 2026. The officer then contacted Progressive Insurance to check the truck’s coverage.

According to the complaint, a company representative said the truck was added on August 20 at 11:22 a.m.

The representative reportedly said the truck had no coverage on August 19.

The state’s insurance allegation relies partly on that timeline.

Three Counts Filed in Becker County

The most serious charge is gross misdemeanor failure to produce proof of insurance.

Prosecutors cited six earlier insurance-related convictions involving incidents from 2019 through 2023.

Under Minnesota Statute 169.791, the charge can carry one year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

The second count alleges unsafe equipment under Minnesota Statute 169.47.

It carries a maximum of 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

The third count is a petty misdemeanor alleging illegal window tint under Minnesota Statute 169.71.

The charges stem from one traffic stop.

The complaint lists court file 03-CR-26-1735 in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District.

The filing identifies a summons, but it does not list a court date.

Public case details may be available through Minnesota Court Records Online.

The charges are allegations, and Lesetmoe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
