DETROIT LAKES (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bemidji man faces three charges following a traffic stop involving a modified pickup truck in Detroit Lakes.

Daunte Robert Curry Lesetmoe, 25, is accused of insurance and vehicle equipment violations following an August 19, 2026, traffic stop.

According to a Becker County District Court complaint, the incident began along Minnesota Highway 34.

Lifted GMC Pickup Draws Police Attention

At approximately 3:11 p.m., an officer noticed a black 2007 GMC Sierra traveling eastbound through Detroit Lakes.

The truck had a custom lift kit, oversized tires, and an aftermarket front bumper, according to the complaint.

The bumper appeared nearly three feet above the ground.

Authorities also reported that the tires extended several inches beyond the fenders.

The officer believed those modifications created possible safety concerns for other motorists.

The vehicle’s dark window tint also raised concerns about compliance with Minnesota law.

Police stopped the truck and identified Lesetmoe as the driver.

Insurance Check Reveals Coverage Discrepancy

During the stop, Lesetmoe reportedly could not provide proof of insurance for the pickup.

He told authorities that his girlfriend insured the vehicle.

After allowing time to obtain proof, the officer instructed Lesetmoe to provide insurance information within ten days.

On August 20, Lesetmoe emailed a Progressive Insurance card listing the truck under an insurance policy.

The card showed a policy period running from April 26 through October 26, 2026.

However, the officer contacted Progressive Insurance to verify whether the pickup was covered during the traffic stop.

According to the complaint, Progressive reported that the vehicle was added on August 20 at 11:22 a.m.

The company reportedly confirmed that the truck was not insured on August 19.

Three Charges Filed in Becker County

Prosecutors filed three charges stemming from the traffic stop.

The most serious charge involves failure to provide proof of insurance with qualifying prior convictions.

That gross misdemeanor falls under Minnesota Statute 169.791.

A gross misdemeanor conviction can carry up to 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

Lesetmoe also faces a misdemeanor unsafe equipment charge under Minnesota Statute 169.47.

That charge carries a possible maximum of 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

The third charge involves window tint restrictions under Minnesota Statute 169.71.

That offense is classified as a petty misdemeanor.

Previous Insurance Violations Listed

The complaint also references six previous insurance-related convictions found during a Department of Public Safety records check.

Those violations stemmed from incidents between June 2019 and September 2023.

Authorities also reported a history of vehicle equipment and driver’s license violations.

The prior insurance convictions are relevant to the gross misdemeanor charge filed in this case.

Case Pending in Becker County Court

The charges are filed in Becker County District Court under case number 03-CR-26-1735.

The complaint is identified as a summons.

The provided court documents do not establish a plea, conviction, or final outcome in this case.

Additional public court information may be available through Minnesota Court Records Online.

All charges remain allegations, and Lesetmoe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
