Menahga Assault Case Ends With Jail, Probation
Menahga (trfnews.i234.me) — Adam Steven Gotchie, 26, of Detroit Lakes, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court.
Gotchie was sentenced for felony domestic assault by strangulation. The case followed an August 2025 domestic assault report in Menahga.
Deputies Responded To 911 Call
According to court records, Becker County deputies were called to a home on Aug. 27, 2025.
A 911 caller reported an active domestic assault. The caller said a woman had been choked.
A deputy arrived at about 10:40 p.m. and met a crying woman outside the home. She identified Gotchie as her now ex-boyfriend.
The woman was asked to stay outside while deputies spoke with Gotchie inside the residence.
Gotchie told deputies he and the woman had been arguing in a bedroom. Court records say the argument involved the woman texting other men.
He said the woman slapped him in the face during the argument. Gotchie admitted he then placed both hands around her neck.
He said he choked her for about five seconds. He also said he squeezed her neck hard.

Woman Reported Losing Consciousness
The woman told deputies that Gotchie came at her during the incident. She said he grabbed her neck with both hands.
She reported being choked until she briefly lost consciousness. She also said her throat hurt afterward.
According to court records, the woman said it was hard to swallow. Deputies observed red marks on both sides of her neck.
Gotchie also admitted to grabbing the woman and throwing her onto a bed, according to the court documents.

Sentence Includes Jail And Probation
On April 14, District Judge Michelle Lawson issued a stay of imposition.
If Gotchie completes probation, the felony conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor.
Gotchie was ordered to serve 30 days in jail. He received credit for the eight days already served.
The remaining jail time may be served through electronic home monitoring. Court records say that he will be at his own expense.
Gotchie was fined $500. He must also pay a $750 victim services assessment and $85 in court fees.
He was placed on supervised probation for five years.
As part of probation, Gotchie was ordered not to drink alcohol or use drugs. He must also complete cognitive skill training.
He must follow cognitive behavioral programming as directed. He was also ordered to complete a domestic abuse batterer’s intervention program.
Gotchie must also complete a comprehensive assessment. He must follow all recommendations, including aftercare.
