Frazee Man Charged In Campground Assault Case

FRAZEE, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) — A Frazee man is facing a felony charge after an alleged domestic assault at a Becker County campground.

Leif John Carlson has been charged in Becker County District Court. The case is filed under court file number 03-CR-26-1096.

Carlson is charged with felony domestic assault by strangulation. He also faces two misdemeanor domestic assault charges.

The alleged incident happened on or about June 4, 2026, in Becker County. The charges were filed in Minnesota’s 7th Judicial District.

Complaint Alleges Assault Inside Tent

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement received a report of a possible domestic assault at a campground in Frazee.

The reporting party said Carlson had allegedly strangled a woman before leaving the campground on foot.

The complaint says Carlson was later described as wearing a dark shirt and khaki shorts. He was also reportedly carrying a blue duffel bag.

The woman told law enforcement that she and Carlson had argued inside their tent.

She said Carlson asked her to make him a cigarette. She said she did not want to do so.

The complaint says Carlson then poured water on her while she was on a mattress.

The woman reported that she began yelling louder during the argument.

Investigators said Carlson allegedly covered the woman’s nose and mouth with his hand.

The complaint says this restricted her breathing for more than a few seconds.

The woman told law enforcement she felt panicked during the alleged assault.

She also said Carlson was on top of her during the incident.

According to the complaint, the woman suffered a burn on her arm while trying to get away.

She also reported that Carlson threatened to burn down the tent before leaving.

Injuries Reported By Victim

The complaint says officers observed red marks on the woman’s face, neck, and chest.

They also reported seeing a burn on her left arm and a cut on her leg.

Law enforcement also noted that the tent appeared to be in disarray.

Water was seen on the floor near an open water bottle, according to the complaint.

Carlson was later located walking near East Main Avenue and Cherry Avenue in Frazee.

He allegedly told law enforcement that nothing happened.

The complaint says Carlson admitted he and the woman had argued.

He denied putting his hands on her.
