Detroit Lakes Man Charged Over Vehicle Registration

Detroit Lakes ( trfnews.i234.me ) — A Detroit Lakes man is facing criminal charges after a traffic investigation led to allegations involving vehicle registration and insurance requirements.

Zachariah John Beaupre, 30, of Detroit Lakes, is charged in Becker County District Court with intent to escape taxation and failure to provide proof of insurance.

The charges are listed in a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota’s 7th Judicial District Court. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Expired Registration Leads to Investigation

According to the complaint, the incident happened on April 8, 2026, in Detroit Lakes.

Authorities said a 2006 Pontiac G6 was observed near Roosevelt Avenue and Dynamic Homes. The vehicle reportedly had Minnesota plates with registration that expired in April 2025.

The complaint states the vehicle later entered the Dynamic Homes parking lot. Officials contacted the driver, identified as Beaupre.

Beaupre allegedly told authorities he purchased the vehicle about a year earlier. He reportedly had not transferred the title into his name.

The complaint states that the previous registered owner said the vehicle had been sold to Beaupre about two years earlier.

Insurance Allegation

According to court documents, Beaupre told authorities the vehicle did not have insurance coverage.

The complaint alleges he did not have proof of insurance available when requested.

Minnesota law requires drivers to maintain proper insurance coverage and provide proof when required by law enforcement.

Court Case Moves Forward

Beaupre faces a gross misdemeanor charge related to vehicle taxation requirements.

That charge carries a possible maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $3,000.

He also faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly failing to provide proof of insurance.

That charge carries a possible maximum penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Court records show the case is pending in Becker County District Court. Future hearings will determine how the case proceeds.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
