Detroit Lakes Man Charged In Vehicle Tax Case

Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) — A Detroit Lakes man is facing three charges in Becker County District Court after a February vehicle-related case.

James Franklin Engelson, 34, of Detroit Lakes, has been charged by summons in Becker County District Court.

The complaint was filed in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District. The court file number is 03-CR-26-575.

The charges stem from an alleged incident on or about February 11, 2026, in Detroit Lakes.

Three Charges Filed In Becker County

Engelson is charged with intent to escape taxation, a gross misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 168.35.

The charge alleges Engelson delayed or failed to properly list and register a motor vehicle.

The complaint alleges this was done with the intent to avoid payment of a vehicle tax.

A conviction on that count could bring up to one year in jail. It could also bring a $3,000 fine.

Engelson is also charged with failure to provide insurance information as a vehicle owner.

That charge is listed as a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.791, subdivision 4.

The complaint alleges Engelson owned a vehicle required to be insured under Minnesota law.

It further alleges he failed to provide proof of insurance when requested.

Complaint Also Lists Illegal Operation Count

A third count charges Engelson with allowing the illegal operation of a motor vehicle.

That charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 169.90, subdivision 2.

The complaint alleges Engelson knowingly allowed the vehicle to be operated contrary to law.

The second and third counts are both misdemeanors.

Each carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail. Each also carries a possible $1,000 fine.

The case was brought by the State of Minnesota against Engelson.

The complaint says there is probable cause for the listed charges.

All charges are only allegations at this stage.

Engelson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
