Bena Woman Charged in $232 Check Forgery Case
Bena (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bena woman was charged in Cass County over an alleged $232 forged check.
Kristen Lavern White was charged with offering or possessing a forged check with intent to defraud.
The alleged offense happened on May 12, 2023, according to the criminal complaint.
The case was filed in Cass County District Court under court file 11-CR-23-1613.
Reported Disputed Check
The complaint says a woman contacted law enforcement on May 18, 2023.
She reported a disputed check involving her parents’ checking account.
The parents allegedly learned that someone had submitted their check through a mobile banking deposit.
They reported that they had not written the check or approved the transaction.
The check was written for $232 and made payable to “CASH.”
The name Kristen White also appeared on the check, according to the complaint.
Bank Records Reviewed
Investigators obtained records for the account that received the disputed check.
The records allegedly showed that the check entered an account owned by White.
The mobile deposit was submitted on May 12, 2023.
The check was processed on May 15, the next business day.
The complaint says account details matched identifying information connected to White.
It also says the mobile deposit occurred in Turtle Lake Township in Cass County.
Charge and Possible Penalty
Prosecutors alleged White offered the forged check with intent to defraud.
She was charged under Minnesota Statute 609.631, subdivision 3.
The law covers offering a forged check or possessing one with intent to offer it.
The complaint classified the count as a gross misdemeanor.
A conviction could bring up to 364 days in jail.
It could also bring a fine of up to $3,000.
The charge described in the complaint is only an allegation.
White is presumed innocent unless she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
