Belcourt Head-On Crash Kills 3 in Rolette County

Rolette County (trfnews.i234.me) — Three people died, and one person was injured in a head-on crash early Sunday morning.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. on BIA 7. A Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa spokesperson confirmed the details.

Officials said a southbound SUV crossed the center line. It then struck a northbound pickup truck.

Three People Killed

The SUV driver was a woman from Belcourt. She died in the crash.

Two passengers inside the pickup also died. They were a Belcourt woman and a man from Devils Lake.

The pickup driver was a Belcourt woman. She was flown by medical helicopter to Minot for treatment.

Officials did not release her condition.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol also assisted at the scene.

Indian Health Service personnel also helped with the emergency response.

Turtle Mountain Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure addressed the deaths in a public statement after the crash.

Azure said the loss affected families, friends, classmates, coworkers, and others throughout the community.

He offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.

Azure also asked residents to check on relatives and friends struggling with the loss.

He encouraged community members to listen and provide support during the difficult days ahead.

Azure described the deaths as a painful loss of young lives. He said they still had much life ahead.

He said grieving does not make a community weak. Instead, he urged residents to support one another.

Azure extended condolences on behalf of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

Officials have not announced additional details about what caused the SUV to cross the center line.

The investigation remains with Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement.
