Mentor Man Shot Protecting Family, Relatives Say
Mentor (trfnews.i234.me) — Family members have identified the victim of a Mentor shooting as Shawn Qualley.
Relatives say Qualley was shot while trying to protect his family from an intruder.
The shooting happened early September 20 at a home in Mentor.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 2:48 a.m.
The call came from a home at 32300 110th Avenue Southeast.
Authorities reported that a man had suffered a gunshot injury.
Family Says Qualley Faces Long Recovery
Family members identified the injured man as Shawn Qualley through an online fundraiser.
They said Qualley was shot in the head during the incident.
According to the family, he suffered a traumatic brain injury.
They said Qualley now faces a long recovery process.
His expected needs include specialized medical care and travel costs.
The family also expects expenses for meals and insurance coverage gaps.
Qualley was taken by ambulance to Grand Forks following the shooting.
He received treatment at Altru Hospital.
Family members said his recovery may require additional specialized care in Grand Forks.
79-Year-Old Man Arrested
Deputies arrested 79-year-old Leslie Manford Anderson following the shooting.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies took Anderson into custody without incident.
He was transported to the Northwest Regional Corrections Center in Crookston.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the shooting.
The sheriff’s statement also did not detail the relationship between Anderson and Qualley.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case.
Investigation Remains Open
The sheriff’s office has not announced that the investigation is complete.
