Detroit Lakes Crash Leads to Driving Charge

DETROIT LAKES (trfnews.i234.me) — A Fergus Falls man faces a gross misdemeanor charge after a two-vehicle crash in Detroit Lakes.

The other driver later died from injuries suffered in the collision, according to a Becker County court complaint.

Everett Ormand Northup is charged with driving after cancellation as inimical to public safety.

The charge was filed in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District Court in Becker County.

Crash Reported on Highway 10

The crash happened around 11:48 a.m. on March 15, 2026.

Emergency crews responded to U.S. Highway 10 and East Shore Drive in Detroit Lakes.

Witnesses reported seeing a westbound pickup traveling in the highway’s right lane.

The pickup then moved left and entered a left-turn lane, the complaint alleges.

It then struck the rear of another pickup truck.

Both vehicles suffered serious damage consistent with witness statements, according to the complaint.

Authorities identified Northup as the driver accused of causing the collision.

Northup’s driving privileges were canceled and denied as inimical to public safety, prosecutors allege.

That status applies when Minnesota officials consider a driver a threat to public safety.

A conviction could bring up to 364 days in jail.

The charge also carries a possible fine of up to $3,000.

The complaint states Northup could not provide proof that the pickup was insured.

He reportedly said he bought the truck the previous June.

He also said the vehicle’s title had not been transferred and its tax remained unpaid.

Prosecutors cited several earlier convictions involving failure to provide insurance information.

The complaint lists convictions from 2010, 2011, 2019, and twice in 2020.

One additional year appears incomplete in the filed complaint.

The charge section lists the offense date as March 15, 2026.

However, the charge description also includes March 15, 2025.

The probable-cause statement identifies the crash date as March 15, 2026.

Northup has been accused but has not been convicted in this case.

He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
