Update: Benson County DUI Injury Crash

  • Where: Southbound Highway 30 milepost 123.5 (5 miles south of Maddock, ND)
  • When: April 21st, 2024, at 1:55 A.M. Central Time
  • Road Conditions: Dry asphalt
  • Weather Conditions: Clear
  • Crash Involvement: Vehicle left roadway striking a bridge guardrail
  • Agencies Involved: North Dakota Highway Patrol, Benson County Sheriff’s Office, Maddock Rural Fire, Maddock Ambulance, and Sanford AirMed.

Vehicle No. 1:

  • Type: 1995 Lincoln Mark III
  • Driver: Donald Ystaas, 71, of Sheyenne, ND – Injured
  • Restraints: Unbelted
  • Charges: Driving under the influence


  • The Lincoln was traveling southbound on Highway 30 when the driver lost control, veering off the roadway.
  • The vehicle collided with the guardrail of the bridge and rotated before coming to rest facing north in the west ditch.
  • Donald Ystaas, the driver, received on-scene treatment from Maddock Ambulance before being transported to SMP Health – St. Aloisius in Harvey for serious injuries.
  • He was later transferred by Sanford AirMed to Sanford in Bismarck for further care.
  • Ystaas was arrested for Driving Under the Influence.
  • The investigation is ongoing under the jurisdiction of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
