According to reports from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the incident occurred roughly 1.5 miles east of Carpio around 1:00 p.m.
The unfortunate sequence of events unfolded when a southbound Canadian Pacific train operator spotted a tractor near the tracks, prompting them to sound the train’s horn. Despite the warning, the operator noticed a man standing on the side of the tracks, who failed to move away. Despite continued horn signals, the man was struck by the oncoming train.
The victim, later identified as an 84-year-old resident of Carpio, suffered fatal injuries upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.
