GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – A devastating tragedy has gripped Tokio, North Dakota, as a couple faces federal charges following the death of their 3-year-old daughter in 2022.
Austin Ray Lester, 28, and Krissy Louise Hinsley, 25, are accused of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of child neglect. Additionally, Lester faces a charge of assaulting a child with a dangerous weapon in Indian country.
According to the indictment, the couple displayed “wanton and reckless disregard for human life amounting to gross negligence,” failing to secure timely medical care for their child, which led to her untimely demise.
Allegations suggest the child was left unattended and accessed acetaminophen, with Lester accused of assaulting her with a wooden back scratcher.
Lester’s assault charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while involuntary manslaughter and child neglect carry maximum sentences of eight and five years, respectively.
Both appeared in court on April 19 and have been provided legal representation. Hinsley’s detention hearing is set for April 23, and Lester’s for April 24, with a trial date set for June 25.
