Otter Tail County (trfnews.i234.me) – Winter driving conditions led to multiple crashes on Sunday afternoon on Interstate 94 west of Fergus Falls. The Minnesota State Patrol reported several crashes that forced a detour for westbound traffic in the area.

Troopers were responding to crashes and spinouts along I-94 as of about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Drivers in the westbound lanes were routed onto a detour while crews worked to clear damaged vehicles and make the road safe again. No detailed injury report from the I-94 scene was immediately available.

The State Patrol also released statewide numbers from the winter storm. From Saturday through 10:00 a.m. On Sunday, troopers responded to 139 crashes across Minnesota. At least nine crashes involved non-life-threatening injuries.

During the same time period, troopers reported 161 vehicles that spun out or slid off the road and needed a tow. There were also four jackknifed semis reported on Minnesota roads. Those incidents added to delays for drivers already dealing with snow and ice.

Officials are urging drivers to slow down and allow extra time for trips. They remind drivers that posted speed limits may be too fast when roads are icy. Extra space between vehicles gives drivers more time to react if someone loses control.

Travelers can check real-time road conditions using Minnesota’s 511 system at 511mn.org. The site shows crash reports, closures, and winter road conditions around the state.

MnDOT also offers winter driving tips at dot.state.mn.us/winter, including advice on safe speeds, following distance, and driving near snowplows. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety posts additional winter safety guidance at dps.mn.gov.

Authorities say the best way to avoid a crash is to slow down, buckle up, and stay off the roads if conditions become too dangerous. Drivers are asked to watch for plows and first responders working along highways like I-94.
