Moorhead Man Faces Felony Knife Assault Charges

Moorhead (trfnews.i234.me) — A Moorhead man faces three charges after an alleged attack inside an apartment.

Ignacio J. Gonzalez Jr., 35, is charged in Clay County District Court.

He faces second-degree assault, threats of violence, and misdemeanor domestic assault.

The charges stem from an incident reported on September 19, 2026.

Roommate Reports Attack

Police responded around 10:17 p.m. after receiving a report of an injured man.

The man said his roommate had attacked him, according to the criminal complaint.

He reportedly had bleeding injuries to his head and possibly his chest.

The complaint identifies Gonzalez as the roommate involved in the incident.

The two men had lived together for about two months, court records state.

The alleged victim said Gonzalez had returned home earlier that day.

He told police Gonzalez had been drinking alcohol throughout the day.

The man reportedly stayed in his bedroom to avoid contact with Gonzalez.

Complaint Alleges Knife Threat

The complaint says Gonzalez later began banging on the bedroom door.

When the door opened, Gonzalez allegedly entered the room and began yelling.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez then kicked a door.

The door allegedly struck the man in the head and caused bleeding.

The complaint says Gonzalez then displayed a six-inch serrated knife.

He allegedly threatened to kill the man while holding the knife.

The man left the apartment and Gonzalez allegedly followed him outside.

Court records say Gonzalez still had the knife during the pursuit.

The man eventually escaped and stopped another person for help.

Police later located Gonzalez inside the apartment.

A SWAT team assisted authorities with taking him into custody.

Three Charges Filed

Gonzalez faces felony second-degree assault under Minnesota Statute 609.222.

That charge carries up to seven years in prison.

It also carries a possible fine of up to $14,000.

He also faces a felony threats of violence charge.

That offense can carry up to five years in prison.

The third count alleges misdemeanor domestic assault.

That charge carries up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

More court information is available through the Minnesota Judicial Branch.

Criminal charges are allegations. Gonzalez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
