Moorhead Man Charged in Major Drug Case

Moorhead, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — A Moorhead man is facing multiple felony charges after a drug investigation led to a search of his apartment.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Clay County District Court, James Matthew Schaan, 43, is charged with several first-degree drug offenses and firearm-related crimes.

The charges stem from an investigation that began in June 2026. Authorities said the investigation focused on suspected drug activity connected to a Moorhead apartment.

Search Leads to Drug and Firearm Charges

The complaint states that investigators obtained a search warrant for Schaan, his apartment, a vehicle, and a motorcycle.

Authorities said the search happened on July 6, 2026, at a residence on 18th Avenue South in Moorhead.

The complaint alleges officers found about 115 grams of suspected methamphetamine and about 37 grams of suspected fentanyl.

Investigators also reported finding cash, prescription pills, suspected psilocybin mushrooms, and identification cards belonging to other people.

Firearm Allegations

The complaint states a Springfield Hellcat firearm was found during the search.

Authorities allege the firearm was stolen from Fargo, North Dakota.

Schaan is also charged with allegedly possessing a firearm while prohibited because of a previous conviction.

The complaint states investigators also found a bullet-resistant vest inside the apartment.

Multiple Felony Counts Filed

Schaan faces eight felony counts, including alleged first-degree drug sales, drug possession, possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, and possessing a vest while committing a crime.

The complaint alleges Schaan admitted to selling fentanyl and told investigators he sold it for $150 per gram.

All charges are allegations, and Schaan is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case was filed in Clay County District Court under Court File No. 14-CR-26-2359.
