Moorhead Felony Case Alleges Benefit Fraud

MOORHEAD, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Fargo woman faces a felony charge involving public assistance received through Clay County. Lisa Marie Swanson was charged with wrongfully obtaining assistance by theft. The charge was filed in Clay County District Court in October 2022. The case concerns assistance issued between May 1 and September 30, 2019. A criminal complaint alleges Swanson failed to report that she was living in Fargo.

Residency Investigation

Clay County received information suggesting Swanson lived at a Fargo apartment. A fraud investigator visited the address on October 22, 2019. No one answered the door during that visit. A property management representative later provided details about the apartment. The representative said Swanson moved there on April 6, 2019. She reportedly lived there with two daughters and her boyfriend. The complaint also cites information from the Fargo Public School District. School records reportedly listed the same Fargo address for Swanson’s children. Investigators sent their findings to Clay County eligibility staff.

Complaint Alleges $7,548 Overpayment

The complaint alleges Swanson received $7,548.82 in medical assistance overpayments. Prosecutors claim the benefits resulted from false statements or hidden information. The filed charge references Minnesota’s law against wrongfully obtaining public assistance. Readers can review the statute through the Minnesota Legislature’s Office of the Revisor of Statutes. Public case information may also be available through Minnesota Court Records Online. A criminal complaint contains allegations and does not prove guilt. Swanson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. I’m Adrian Cole, reporting for TRF News. Copyright 2026 TRF News. All rights reserved.
