Minneapolis Increases Minimum Price for Cigarettes to $15

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – The Minneapolis City Council has approved an amendment to raise the minimum price for a pack of cigarettes and other commercial tobacco products to $15. Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw emphasized that this measure aims to protect youth and communities of color from targeted marketing by the tobacco industry. The city predicts that this price increase will decrease tobacco use, citing the industry’s tactic of using price discounts and coupons to attract vulnerable populations.

Contrary to common assumptions, the additional revenue from higher prices will not go to the government but will benefit the retailers and stores selling tobacco products. However, some, like Mohammed Hassan from Uptown Tobacco & E-Cigs, argue that the price hike may negatively impact businesses without significantly affecting smoking rates.

The amendment not only sets a minimum price but also imposes stricter penalties for stores violating tobacco policies, aiming to create a more regulated environment regarding tobacco sales in Minneapolis.
