Mahnomen Man Charged After License Stop

Mahnomen (trfnews.i234.me) — A Mahnomen man is facing charges after a traffic stop in the city of Mahnomen.

Dale Edward Defoe is charged in Mahnomen County District Court with driving after cancellation.

He is also charged with failure to provide proof of insurance.

The case is filed in Minnesota’s 9th Judicial District under court file 44-CR-26-12.

Traffic Stop In Mahnomen

According to the complaint, the stop happened January 2, 2026.

A law enforcement officer was on stationary patrol in Mahnomen.

The officer reported seeing Defoe driving a black GMC Yukon.

The vehicle was seen near West Monroe Avenue and 1st Street.

Authorities then checked Defoe’s driving status, according to court documents.

The complaint says the check showed his driving privileges were canceled.

The cancellation was listed as inimical to public safety.

Authorities initiated a traffic stop and explained the reason for the stop.

Defoe was unable to provide proof of insurance for the vehicle.

He was then placed under arrest, according to the complaint.

Defoe was taken to the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office.

The complaint says he was booked and released on the listed charges.

The driving charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 171.24.

The insurance charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 169.791.

The driving after cancellation charge is a gross misdemeanor.

It carries a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail.

It also carries a possible $3,000 fine, or both.

The proof of insurance charge is listed as a misdemeanor.

That count carries up to 90 days in jail.

It also carries a possible $1,000 fine, or both.

A summons was issued in the case.

The charges are only accusations at this stage.

Defoe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
