Kandiyohi County: Hwy 71 Crash Injures 92-Year-Old

DOVRE TOWNSHIP, Kandiyohi County (trfnews.i234.me) — A 92-year-old Willmar man was hurt in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 71 Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened near 66th Avenue Northeast at 4:06 p.m. on November 25. The Minnesota State Patrol released the report later that day.

According to the State Patrol, a 2021 Subaru Outback was traveling south on Highway 71. A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was traveling north on Highway 71. The vehicles collided in the northbound lanes of the highway. The road surface was wet at the time of the crash.

The Subaru Outback was driven by Gordon Frank Steffen, 92, of Willmar. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Steffen was taken to Rice Hospital in Willmar for treatment. The State Patrol notes that he was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not involved.

The Chevrolet Silverado was driven by Kayden Alexander Andrist, 17, of New London. He was not injured in the crash. The report says he was also wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not a factor for Andrist.

Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the scene. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also assisted. The Spicer Fire Department helped with scene safety and traffic control. CentraCare Ambulance crews handled medical care and transport from the crash site.

Traffic on Highway 71 slowed while first responders worked in the area. Vehicles passed the scene at reduced speeds until the roadway was cleared. Damage details for the Subaru and Silverado were not included in the summary.

Officials remind drivers that wet pavement can increase stopping distances. Even normal speeds may be too fast when roads are slick. Drivers are urged to leave extra space and watch for turning or slowing vehicles.
