Fargo-Moorhead Warned of Squishy Toy Burn Risk
FARGO-MOORHEAD, N.D.-MINN. (trfnews.i234.me) — A viral TikTok trend involving squishy toys is raising new safety concerns.
Some videos show people heating the toys inside microwave ovens. The goal is often to make the toys softer.
However, heated toys can burst without warning. Hot liquid or gel may then spray onto nearby children.
The result can include painful burns requiring medical care. Parents should tell children never to microwave toys.
Parents Urged to Teach Safe Habits
Katie Heck coordinates Sanford Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead.
Heck said prevention should begin with clear talks between adults and children. Lessons should also match each child’s age.
Young children may not understand heat dangers or microwave safety. Adults should handle hot items and model safe choices.
Families can practice using oven mitts when moving hot bowls. Children should also learn to ask an adult for help.
Hot Vehicles Can Also Create Danger
Experts said squishy toys should not remain inside hot vehicles. Car interiors can heat up quickly during warm weather.
A toy left inside may become dangerously hot. Children may rush back to retrieve it without recognizing the risk.
Heck urged parents to retrieve hot toys themselves. Adults should let each toy cool before a child touches it.
Parents can also explain why parked vehicles are unsafe. Children should never enter a hot car alone.
What Families Should Do After a Burn
For a minor burn, place the injured area under cool running water. Do not use ice on the skin.
The American Academy of Pediatrics provides more burn first-aid guidance.
The American Red Cross also recommends quickly cooling burns with clean running water.
Serious burns need prompt medical attention. Families should contact a medical provider when they are unsure.
Call 911 for life-threatening injuries or severe symptoms. Follow all safety warnings printed on toy packaging.
Parents can also review TikTok’s online safety resources with older children.
