Fargo Jail Security Breach: Person Walks Out Unnoticed
FARGO, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing a security incident after a person left the county jail without authorization.
The individual was being held for intoxication management and was not facing criminal charges.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident happened around 8:45 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2026.
The individual left through an unsecured door connected to the jail’s booking area.
Fargo police located the person approximately 25 minutes later and returned them to sheriff’s office custody.
Person Leaves Jail Through Unsecured Holding Area
The incident occurred inside the booking section of the Cass County Jail in Fargo.
According to the sheriff’s office, the individual was being held solely for intoxication management.
The person was not serving a sentence or being detained on criminal charges.
The sheriff’s office reported that the individual gained access to an area leading outside the facility.
A holding cell door had closed but failed to properly secure.
The problem allowed the individual to leave without authorization.
Security System Failed to Detect Unsecured Door
According to the sheriff’s office, the holding cell has two separate doors.
One door connects to the jail’s booking area.
The second door provides access to the sallyport, where vehicles enter for prisoner intake.
The sallyport’s exterior walk-through doors are designed to allow people to exit during emergencies.
During the incident, the door leading from the holding cell to the sallyport did not lock properly.
The jail’s electronic monitoring system failed to detect the unsecured door.
That failure became a central concern in the sheriff’s office review.
Fargo Police Locate Individual Within 25 Minutes
After the unauthorized departure, authorities began searching for the individual.
According to the sheriff’s office, Fargo police located the person approximately 25 minutes later.
The individual was found just south of the jail facility.
Officers returned the person to the custody of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
The release did not identify the individual or report any additional criminal charges.
Authorities also did not report injuries connected to the incident.
Why the Individual Was Being Held
The Cass County Jail sometimes houses individuals who cannot safely care for themselves because of intoxication.
According to the sheriff’s office, these placements follow established intoxication management guidelines.
Some individuals do not qualify for placement at Fargo’s detoxification center.
Others may require a more secure setting because of disruptive behavior or additional safety concerns.
The jail provides temporary supervision for those individuals.
People held solely for intoxication management are not being detained on criminal charges related to that placement.
They are generally expected to be released within 24 hours once they can safely care for themselves.
Holding Cell Removed From Service
Following the incident, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office implemented immediate safety measures.
According to the release, the holding cell involved has been removed from service.
It will remain unavailable while maintenance personnel evaluate the security problem.
The assessment will examine necessary repairs and possible improvements to the locking system.
Officials are also reviewing how the unsecured door went undetected by electronic monitoring equipment.
Sheriff’s Office Reviews Jail Security Procedures
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said it will conduct a broader review of the incident.
That review will examine procedures, security systems, and possible weaknesses in the facility.
Officials plan to implement additional safeguards based on their findings.
The sheriff’s office has not announced a completion date for the investigation.
The release also did not provide a timetable for returning the holding cell to service.
Additional information about county operations is available through the Cass County government website.
Readers can also find law enforcement information through the Fargo Police Department.
Investigation and Safety Improvements Continue
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the person involved was not being held on criminal charges.
The incident involved an unauthorized departure from an intoxication management holding area.
Officials confirmed that the individual was located and returned without a prolonged search.
The investigation will focus on preventing similar security failures.
Additional findings may be released after the facility completes its review.
