East Grand Forks Man Faces 3 Felony Assault Counts

East Grand Forks (trfnews.i234.me) — Munier Abdiaziz Abokar faces three felony assault charges in Polk County.

The charges follow an alleged assault at an East Grand Forks apartment building.

The incident happened during the early morning hours of September 8, 2026.

The case is filed as 60-CR-26-1333 in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

Fight Reported Inside Apartment

Police responded to an apartment building on 8th Avenue Northwest around 1:25 a.m.

The alleged victim, identified as S.M.M., was found injured in a hallway.

The complaint says S.M.M. had a bleeding head wound and several facial injuries.

Emergency workers determined that his head injury needed stitches.

He was taken to Altru Hospital for treatment.

S.M.M. told investigators he had been staying with Munier Abdiaziz Abokar.

He alleged Abokar punched him twice during an argument.

S.M.M. said he then struck Abokar in return.

The complaint says Abokar left the apartment and later returned with Mohamed Abdirisak Sugule.

Prosecutors allege Abokar encouraged Sugule to assault S.M.M.

S.M.M. alleged Sugule then struck him several times with a black 9mm pistol.

Abokar Gives Different Account

Police arrested Abokar later that day after he left the apartment building.

Abokar gave investigators a different account of what happened.

He said S.M.M. had punched him several times.

Abokar said he asked S.M.M. to leave, but S.M.M. refused.

He said he then went to get Sugule.

Abokar acknowledged that Sugule returned with a gun.

However, Abokar denied that Sugule displayed the weapon or assaulted S.M.M.

Investigators reported seeing several injuries on Abokar after his arrest.

Police Search Apartments

Authorities later searched two apartments connected to the case.

They reported finding blood in several areas of one apartment.

A 9mm cartridge was found on a kitchen counter.

Another matching cartridge was found outside the building.

Surveillance video also became part of the investigation.

The complaint says video showed Sugule walking in a hallway while holding a gun.

S.M.M. later told police that a doctor said his cheek was broken.

Three Felony Counts Filed

Abokar faces two second-degree assault charges under Minnesota Statute 609.222.

He also faces third-degree assault under Minnesota Statute 609.223.

Prosecutors allege Abokar participated directly or aided another person in the assault.

Prosecutors also gave notice that they may seek an aggravated sentence.

The notice relates to alleged firearm possession or use during the offenses.

The charges are allegations and do not establish guilt.

Abokar is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
