Detroit Lakes Man Gets 90 Days in Felony Assault Case

Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) — Samuel Joseph Renteria, 39, has been sentenced for felony domestic assault in Becker County District Court.

Renteria, of Detroit Lakes, received a stayed prison sentence during a July 9 hearing.

Two felony threats of violence counts were dismissed under a plea agreement.

Judge Orders Jail and Probation

Becker County District Judge Gretchen Thilmony imposed a one-year prison sentence at St. Cloud.

The prison term was stayed for five years.

That means Renteria will not serve it unless the stay is later revoked.

Renteria was ordered to serve 90 days in jail.

He received credit for 35 days already served.

The court also fined him $1,000 and ordered $160 in court fees.

Renteria was placed on supervised probation for five years.

The case began after a disturbance at Renteria’s Detroit Lakes apartment on November 27, 2025.

Court records say law enforcement was sent to the apartment around 3:30 a.m.

Dispatch reported that Renteria was intoxicated and acting in an erratic and threatening way.

There were also concerns about the safety of children inside the apartment.

Court records said Renteria threatened to release his German Shepherd when officers arrived.

Records also described threats directed toward one officer and that officer’s family.

Those allegations were part of the original case filed in Becker County District Court.

The two threats of violence charges were later dismissed through the plea agreement.

Renteria was sentenced on the remaining felony domestic assault case.

The court placed several conditions on Renteria during his probation period.

He may not drink alcohol or use drugs.

He must complete a mental health evaluation.

He must also complete a domestic abuse batterer’s intervention program.

The court ordered a comprehensive assessment and required Renteria to follow its recommendations.

Those recommendations may include treatment and aftercare.

Failure to follow probation conditions could lead to further court action.

The stayed prison sentence could also be imposed if probation is revoked.
