Detroit Lakes Man Charged After DWI Arrest

DETROIT LAKES (trfnews.i234.me) — A Pelican Rapids man faces two charges after an early morning arrest in Detroit Lakes.

Rayn Justin Jacobson, 28, is charged in Becker County District Court.

The charges include third-degree driving while impaired for refusing chemical testing. That charge is a gross misdemeanor.

Jacobson also faces felony fourth-degree assault involving a correctional employee.

The allegations were filed in Becker County court. They have not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Man Found Unresponsive in Pickup

Police responded to the Circle K in Detroit Lakes around 1:57 a.m. on July 3.

A caller reported a man passed out behind the wheel of a blue Ford pickup.

An officer found Jacobson asleep in the driver’s seat, according to the complaint.

Jacobson reportedly had difficulty staying awake and spoke very little.

The complaint states his eyes appeared glossy and bloodshot. He was also sweating.

Jacobson was unsteady when he left the vehicle, the complaint said.

Police reported several possible signs of impairment during field sobriety tests.

Police offered Jacobson a preliminary breath test during the investigation.

The complaint states he delayed the test and was then arrested.

Jacobson allegedly struggled, kicked, and attempted to fight officers during the arrest.

Officers used leg restraints before taking him to a local emergency room.

A judge later approved a warrant for a blood or urine sample.

Medical workers and law enforcement attempted to collect the sample.

Jacobson allegedly yelled, used profanity, and refused to cooperate.

Authorities determined that he refused the court-authorized chemical test.

Jacobson was taken to the Becker County jail after leaving the hospital.

At the jail, he allegedly swung several times at a correctional officer.

The complaint states the officer suffered facial redness and a cut.

The officer’s glasses were also broken during the reported incident.

The felony assault charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

It also carries a possible $4,000 fine, or both penalties.

The DWI test-refusal charge carries up to 364 days in jail.

That charge also carries a possible $3,000 fine.

Jacobson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
