Cass Lake Man Charged After Casino Bag Theft

CASS LAKE (trfnews.i234.me) — A Cass Lake man faces three criminal charges after a reported theft outside Cedar Lakes Casino.

Warrior James Boswell, 21, is charged in Cass County District Court. The charges include felony possession of ammunition by an ineligible person.

He also faces a gross misdemeanor BB gun charge and a misdemeanor theft charge.

The allegations are contained in a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District. A criminal charge is only an accusation. Boswell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Police Respond To Casino Theft Report

Leech Lake Tribal Police responded at about 7:38 p.m. on July 10, 2026.

The call involved a black bag reportedly taken from a bicycle outside Cedar Lakes Casino.

Officers later found Boswell near a nearby store, according to the complaint.

He was wearing a backpack and looking through another bag. Boswell allegedly admitted taking the bag from the casino area.

However, he reportedly claimed the bag belonged to him.

Police said Boswell carried a BB pistol in his waistband. Officers also reported finding a metal baton and drug-related items.

Ammunition Allegedly Found In Backpack

The complaint says another BB pistol was found inside Boswell’s backpack.

Police also reported finding a full box of 9mm ammunition and more drug-related items.

Casino video allegedly showed Boswell riding a bicycle near the bike rack.

The video reportedly showed him cutting a backpack from another bicycle.

He then allegedly left the area using a different bicycle.

The bag’s owner later confirmed the bag belonged to him. However, he said it was empty and declined further action.

Charges And Possible Penalties

The felony ammunition charge carries a possible 15-year prison sentence. It also carries a possible $30,000 fine.

The complaint cites Boswell’s June 22, 2026, second-degree burglary conviction.

Minnesota law restricts ammunition possession after certain violent crime convictions. The law is available through the Minnesota Revisor of Statutes.

The public BB gun charge carries up to 364 days in jail. It also carries a possible $3,000 fine.

The theft charge carries up to 90 days in jail and a possible $1,000 fine.
