Bemidji Man Faces Interlock Charges After Stop

Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bemidji man is facing two gross misdemeanor charges after a traffic stop in Beltrami County.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Minnesota District Court, Cale Douglas Mills is accused of driving without a required ignition interlock device. He is also accused of driving after revocation while participating in the ignition interlock program.

The case was filed in Beltrami County District Court under court file number 04-CR-26-1126.

Traffic Stop On Roosevelt Road

The complaint states the stop happened on or about May 16, 2026. A Minnesota State Patrol unit was traveling on Roosevelt Road in Beltrami County.

Authorities reported seeing a white Lexus and checking its license plate. The complaint says the registered owner was listed as Cale Douglas Mills.

Investigators then learned Mills had a revoked license. They also learned he had an ignition interlock restriction.

The vehicle was then stopped by law enforcement.

According to the complaint, Mills gave officers an expired driver’s license. The license identified him as Cale Douglas Mills.

Complaint Lists Two Charges

Mills is charged with violating driving restrictions tied to an ignition interlock device.

The complaint says Mills was required to use a vehicle with a working ignition interlock device. Prosecutors allege the Lexus did not have one installed.

That count is listed under Minnesota Statute 171.09.

Mills is also charged with driving after revocation while in the ignition interlock program.

That charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 171.24.

Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail. Each charge also carries a possible $3,000 fine.

Prior Driving Record Cited

The complaint says Mills told officers he had an ignition interlock device in another vehicle. He allegedly said it was too costly to install one in the Lexus.

The complaint also states Mills referenced a prior DWI from seven years earlier.

Court records cited in the complaint list prior gross misdemeanor DWI convictions. The complaint also notes another pending case involving driving after revocation without an ignition interlock.

A criminal complaint is not a conviction. Mills is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
