The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office says deputies went to an apartment in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue North.
A woman had called 911 and claimed she was holding a man hostage inside the unit.

Deputies arrived to help the Grand Forks Police.
After finding the correct apartment, officers believed the man inside was in immediate danger.
They chose to enter quickly to protect him.

Once inside, officers saw both the male hostage and the woman suspected of making the call.
Investigators say the deputy opened fire after seeing a threat from the woman.
The deputy shot multiple times.

The man who was described as a hostage was not injured.
The woman was hit several times.
Officers gave aid and called an ambulance.
She was taken to Altru Hospital for treatment.

No officers were hurt during the incident.
The deputy who fired the shots is now on administrative leave.
The sheriff’s office notes this is routine in such cases.

The investigation is being handled by the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, the Grand Forks Police Department, and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The agencies will review body camera video, witness statements, and other evidence.

Officials say there is no danger to the public at this time.

Names and more facts are expected to be released as the case moves forward.
The woman is presumed innocent unless and until a court decides otherwise.
