Esmond Teen Dies After Buffalo Lake Emergency

ESMOND, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) — An 18-year-old Hampden man died Friday after a water emergency near Esmond.

The incident happened at Buffalo Lake Recreation Area, about three miles west of Esmond.

Authorities received the emergency call at about 2:13 p.m. on July 31, 2026.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Ian Iverson, 18, of Hampden.

Bystanders Bring Iverson to Shore

The 911 caller reported that Iverson had gone underwater at the recreation area.

Bystanders searched the water, located Iverson, and brought him back to shore.

They completed the rescue before law enforcement officers and ambulance workers arrived.

Emergency crews began life-saving efforts soon after reaching the lake.

Despite those efforts, Iverson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office released no further details about the events before Iverson went underwater.

The final cause of Iverson’s death has not been determined.

Authorities requested an autopsy to help establish the cause and manner of death.

Officials did not provide a timeline for the autopsy findings.

The medical review could provide more information about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office responded to Buffalo Lake Recreation Area.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol also responded to the emergency.

North Dakota Game and Fish personnel were also called to the recreation area.

Harvey Ambulance provided emergency medical assistance during the response.

The Esmond Fire Department and Rugby Police Department also sent personnel.

The response brought together local, county, and state agencies following the 911 call.

Buffalo Lake Recreation Area is located in Pierce County, west of the Esmond community.
