Waubun Man Charged in Felony Domestic Assault

Mahnomen County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Cass Lake man is facing felony domestic assault charges following a reported July 2026 incident in Waubun.

Felony Domestic Assault Charge Filed

According to a criminal complaint filed in Mahnomen County District Court, Kristopher Lee Roybal, 26, is charged with felony domestic assault and interfering with an emergency 911 call.

The complaint states the alleged incident happened on July 6, 2026, at a residence on 3rd Street in Waubun.

Roybal is accused of assaulting Brittany Marie Tucker Spears, who the complaint identifies as a former dating partner. The two also share three children.

The complaint alleges Roybal punched Spears twice during an argument. One strike reportedly hit her face and caused a bloody nose. Another strike allegedly hit her hand as she tried to protect herself.

911 Call Interference Alleged

Spears told investigators she attempted to call law enforcement during the incident. The complaint states that Roybal allegedly took her phone away to stop her from making the emergency call.

Officials say Spears later regained possession of the phone and left the residence to call 911.

When officers arrived, the complaint states they found Spears outside with visible injuries. The injuries reportedly included blood on her face and hands, along with bruising.

Roybal Taken Into Custody

Authorities searched the residence and located Roybal inside. He was arrested and transported to Tri-County Corrections after being medically cleared.

The complaint states that investigators found evidence inside the home that was consistent with Spears’ account.

Roybal also faces a gross misdemeanor charge for allegedly interfering with an emergency communication.

Previous Convictions Listed

Court documents state Roybal has previous convictions involving domestic violence-related offenses.

The complaint lists prior cases involving assault, domestic assault, and violations connected to court orders.

Roybal’s current felony charge carries a possible maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both if convicted.

The charges are allegations, and Roybal is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
