Detroit Lakes Man Charged After Traffic Stop
Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) – A Frazee man is facing charges in Becker County after a traffic stop in Detroit Lakes.
Cory Thomas Swift, 49, of Frazee, is charged in Becker County District Court. The case was filed under court file number 03-CR-26-876.
Swift faces one gross misdemeanor count of failing to provide insurance information. He also faces one misdemeanor count of driving after revocation.
Traffic Stop Reported In Detroit Lakes
According to the court complaint, the case began on April 7, 2026. Police said a black Toyota Camry turned from U.S. Highway 10 onto Frazee Street.
The complaint says the vehicle was seen near Frazee Street and Corbett Road. Police reported the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
An officer stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Cory Thomas Swift. Court documents state Swift’s driving privileges were revoked at the time.
Insurance Proof Allegation
The complaint says Swift could not provide proof that the vehicle was insured. Police said he was given a written request for insurance information.
Court documents allege Swift did not return the insurance form. Prosecutors cited Minnesota’s insurance law under Minnesota Statute 169.791.
The gross misdemeanor insurance charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail. It also carries a possible $3,000 fine.
The driving after revocation charge was filed under Minnesota Statute 171.24. That charge carries up to 90 days in jail. It also carries a possible $1,000 fine.
Prior Convictions Listed
The complaint also lists several prior driving after revocation convictions. Those cases date from 2013 through 2025.
It also lists prior insurance violations from 2016 and 2019. Prosecutors said those prior cases affect the current insurance charge.
The charges are accusations at this stage. Swift is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
