On December 16, 2024, at approximately 6:58 a.m., a collision occurred on Highway 34 between mile markers 47 and 48 in Height of Land Township, Becker County. A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, operated by 23-year-old Austin Lee Engel of Detroit Lakes, collided with the rear of a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) snowplow truck.
Both vehicles were traveling westbound at the time of the incident. The driver of the snowplow, identified as 28-year-old Zachery Allen Krause, also from Detroit Lakes, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Engel was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment. Both individuals were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed in the Cavalier. The road conditions were reported as snowy or icy, and alcohol was not a contributing factor in the accident.
