GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) One man was killed in a high speed crash in Grand Forks early Thursday morning, following a pursuit that ended before the crash.
Neil Berg here in Grand Forks and Belmont Road in about 6th Street where we had a deadly crash this morning one man was killed after crashing into a tree at a very high speed joining me now is lieutenant bill Macki the Grand Forks Police Department so what happened looking at us this morning about 5:16 a.m. one of our patrol officers attempted me to make a traffic stop on a vehicle for about a minute the vehicle refused to stop and was just driving at normal speeds the officer activated a siren at that point the operator of the vehicle rapidly accelerated and actively fled from the officer several blocks later the suspect in further attempts to evade the officer turned off his headlights and accelerated even more at that point the patrol sergeant terminated the pursuit as they were nearing the downtown area and very shortly thereafter the pursuing officer noted that the suspect vehicle had crashed into a tree officers rendered aid and summoned Altru paramedics however the subject did die of his injuries male subject and I take the name wouldn’t be released yet at this point we’re not releasing the name pending formal identification and family notifications so folks can see here the vehicle was ripped in half any idea how fast was going on hit the tree there really is no strong indication at this point our patrol officer prior to the pursuit being terminated it was actually several blocks behind the vehicle so estimates on the suspects vehicle are really going to be determined based on the crash reconstruction do you know what the initial traffic stop was for as a minor equipment violation okay all right so you guys still looking for anybody if any information and saw this to kind of collaborate what happened here certainly if there are any witnesses that observed either the pursuit the driving behavior of the vehicle or the crash itself we would encourage them to contact us at the police department okay thanks for talking to me thank you all right a deadly crash here on Belmont Road in Grand Forks driver hit a tree at high speed the vehicle ripped in half male driver killed name being withheld until pending notification of relatives in Grand Forks and Neil Berg reporting fariah news that TV
