Thompson I-29 Crossover Crash Injures Three

Thompson (trfnews.i234.me) — Three vehicles were damaged and three people were injured after an illegal median crossover turn near Thompson.

The crash happened near Interstate 29 mile marker 136, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Seven people were inside the three vehicles involved in the collision.

A dog traveling in one vehicle was not injured.

Crash Began at Median Crossover

The Highway Patrol said a Toyota Camry slowed near the median crossover.

The Camry driver was attempting to turn around using the crossover.

A GMC Acadia then struck the Camry, according to the patrol.

The Acadia glanced away from the first impact and sideswiped a Honda Odyssey.

All three vehicles sustained damage during the chain-reaction crash.

Three people suffered injuries.

The patrol did not provide additional details about their conditions.

The Highway Patrol also did not release the names of the drivers or passengers.

The Camry driver received a citation for care required.

The citation carried a $30 fine and two points on the driver’s license.

North Dakota law requires motorists to drive carefully and consider roadway conditions.

The state’s care-required law is listed under North Dakota Century Code Section 39-09-01.1.

No arrest was reported in connection with the crash.

The Highway Patrol said interstate median crossovers are reserved for authorized vehicles.

Regular motorists should not use them to reverse direction on an interstate.

Drivers who miss an exit should continue to a safe location before turning around.

The patrol said the unsafe shortcut near Thompson led to damaged vehicles and injuries.

The agency urged motorists to spend the extra time needed to reach a legal turnaround point.

Photos released by the Highway Patrol showed heavy damage to the Toyota.

Images also showed major damage to the GMC and side damage to the Honda.

The incident was highlighted as a warning about illegal interstate median use.
