Thief River Falls, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — Matthew Peter Stengrim of Thief River Falls is facing a felony charge. The case involves alleged Snapchat messages to a juvenile girl.

According to court documents, the alleged conduct happened last summer. Prosecutors say Stengrim sent sexually explicit videos through Snapchat. The juvenile is not named in public court records.

The complaint says the videos are related to sexual conduct. It says the messages were sent by electronic communication. It does not describe the videos in detail.

Charge filed

Stengrim is charged with distributing material that relates to or describes sexual conduct to a child. The charge is tied to Minnesota’s electronic solicitation law. That law covers Internet-based apps and other electronic systems.

Under Minnesota law, the offense can involve “material” that is a photo or video image. The statute also lists a maximum penalty. It allows up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

You can read the statute at the Minnesota Revisor’s Office: Minn. Stat. 609.352.

Other pending case

Court records also show Stengrim has pending drug charges in a separate case. The drug case details were not included in this complaint. A judge will handle each case on its own schedule.

What happens next

Felony cases often include an initial appearance and later hearings. A judge can set bail and release rules. The court also sets deadlines for future dates.

Public court entries can be searched through Minnesota Court Records Online. The system is known as MCRO. The Minnesota Judicial Branch also has an overview page for MCRO access.

For criminal history searches, Minnesota points users to the BCA’s public system. That site is the Minnesota Public Criminal History Search.

Reporting and safety resources

Snapchat says users can report illegal content inside the app. Snapchat also offers help pages on reporting abuse. See: how to report abuse on Snapchat.

A criminal charge is not proof of guilt. Stengrim is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
