Strandquist Man Charged with DWI and ATV Violations

KARLSTAD, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me— A Strandquist man is facing multiple charges, including gross misdemeanor DWI, after allegedly driving an ATV on Highway 59 while intoxicated and refusing a chemical test.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kittson County District Court, Brent Edward Thompson, 57, was charged with second-degree DWI (refusal to test), third-degree DWI, and driving restriction violations related to ignition interlock and alcohol restrictions. He was also cited for operating an ATV on a public roadway and improper equipment — no lights.

On the evening of October 9, 2025, a Kittson County deputy observed an ATV traveling about 40 mph north on Highway 59 without headlights or taillights. The deputy stopped the vehicle near the Karlstad Korner and identified the driver as Thompson.

The deputy reported that Thompson smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, and red, watery eyes. When questioned, Thompson admitted to drinking earlier that day. He also acknowledged that the ATV did not have proper lighting and that he drove it on the highway from his residence.

Field sobriety tests showed multiple signs of impairment. A preliminary breath test registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.214. After being arrested and transported to the Kittson County Jail, Thompson refused to take a formal breath test, reportedly telling the deputy it was “none of [his] business.”

Records show Thompson’s license was restricted to vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device and prohibited alcohol use. He also has a prior DWI conviction from 2018 in Marshall County for test refusal.

If convicted, Thompson faces up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine on each gross misdemeanor count. The case remains pending in Kittson County District Court.
