Roseau, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — Roseau residents gathered outside the Roseau County Courthouse on Monday, October 26, 2026, demanding stronger protections for children.

Parents and community members carried signs while calling for tougher monitoring of people accused or convicted of crimes involving children.

The protest followed a felony harassment case involving three young children in Roseau.

Residents said they are frustrated with what they believe are weak consequences and insufficient safeguards.

Roseau Parents Turn Petition Into Public Protest

Andrea Erickson organized the effort after learning about a September incident involving three children.

Erickson, a mother of two, has lived in the Roseau area for about 20 years.

She started a Change.org petition calling for stronger child protections.

The petition had gathered nearly 800 signatures by the time of the courthouse protest, according to local reporting.

Protester Wonda Osborne said residents intend to keep showing up until their concerns receive attention.

Another protester, Donna Smith, said children’s safety matters even to residents without children of their own.

Protesters called for stronger enforcement, closer monitoring, and more resources for families.

Felony Harassment Charge Sparks Community Concern

The demonstration followed criminal charges against Nicholas James Gerulli Jr., 49, of Roseau.

According to court documents, Gerulli allegedly approached three children at a Roseau Burger King on September 20.

The children were ages 11, 10, and 10.

Investigators say Gerulli followed the children into the restaurant around 9 p.m.

A restaurant manager reported inappropriate sexual comments and gestures directed toward the children.

The manager told Gerulli to leave, according to the criminal complaint.

Investigators allege he later approached the children again near Center Street and Main Avenue.

The complaint states he made another inappropriate gesture and asked where they lived.

Suspect Released After Posting Bond

Gerulli faces felony harassment involving a victim under 18 and alleged sexual or aggressive intent.

He was released after posting a $500 bond, according to Valley News Live.

His release became a major concern for residents who attended Monday’s demonstration.

Erickson said she believes officials should provide stronger oversight when defendants return to the community.

She also said she contacted county leaders but had not received responses to her earlier messages.

Previous Court Cases Raise Additional Questions

State court records cited by Valley News Live show Gerulli has previous harassment-related convictions.

Those include harassment restraining-order violations in 2018, 2020, and 2021.

Records also show a 2015 conviction for fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Those previous convictions are separate from the current felony harassment charge.

The latest allegations have not been proven in court. Gerulli is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Petition Calls for Stronger Child Safety Measures

The petition urges local leaders to strengthen supervision and enforce existing laws.

Supporters also want better education, counseling, and assistance for affected families.

Residents say their concerns extend beyond this single criminal case.

They want county officials to address how communities can better protect children while respecting legal rights.
