According to a criminal complaint filed in Roseau County District Court, police were sent to the apartment building after dispatch received a report of a woman in distress. Officers spoke with the victim, who said she had been hurt during a series of arguments with Budziszewski earlier that day.

The victim said Budziszewski tried to choke her and covered her mouth to stop her from screaming. She showed officers where he grabbed her near the collarbone. She said she feared he would hurt her again.

The victim’s mother told officers she heard her daughter scream for help during a phone call. She said she also heard Budziszewski make a threat, saying, “How would you like it if I killed you while you are sleeping?” The mother reported she heard her daughter yelling for help before the call ended.

According to the complaint, the victim recently got her own apartment and is still moving out of the shared home. The two share a child. She told police that during the incident, she went into a bedroom. Budziszewski then forced the door open, pushed her onto the bed, and held her down. She said he blocked her arms with his legs while covering her mouth.

When she tried to leave the apartment, she said Budziszewski tried to stop her. Police say the woman appeared shaken and afraid.

Budziszewski faces a felony count of threats of violence, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He also faces a misdemeanor domestic assault charge, which carries a possible jail sentence of up to 90 days.

More information on threat-related offenses is available through the Minnesota Statutes.
