Roseau Boat Theft Case Leads to Meth Charge
ROSEAU COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Ryan Tadd Grindahl, 41, of Ada, faces drug and theft charges in Roseau County.
The charges follow an alleged boat theft reported in rural Roseau during July.
Boat And Trailer Reported Stolen
A criminal complaint says a riverboat and trailer disappeared from property near Roseau on July 14.
Derrick Byfuglien estimated the boat and trailer were worth about $800 together.
A trail camera recorded a four-wheeler entering the property that evening.
Minutes later, the camera showed a similar rider leaving while pulling a boat.
The complaint says a woman later identified the rider as Ryan Tadd Grindahl.
The identification followed the posting of trail-camera images on Facebook.
Roxy Kjos later reported seeing a four-wheeler pulling a boat the following morning.
The ATV was described as having a yellow crate mounted on the front.
Authorities Stop Grindahl In Roseau
Authorities later stopped Grindahl while he was driving an ATV in Roseau.
The complaint says the ATV matched the description connected to the reported theft.
His clothing and appearance also allegedly matched the trail-camera images.
Grindahl reportedly said he believed he had permission to retrieve the boat.
He said that permission came from Daryl Dahlquist, according to the complaint.
Authorities later learned Dahlquist no longer owned the property involved in the case.
The complaint also states Dahlquist was living in a nursing home.
Suspected Meth Found After Arrest
Grindahl was arrested and taken to the Roseau County Detention Center.
Authorities allegedly found a small bag containing suspected methamphetamine in his pocket.
A field test produced a presumptive positive result for methamphetamine, according to the complaint.
The substance weighed about 0.20 grams.
The complaint says Grindahl later admitted the substance was methamphetamine.
He also directed authorities toward an area where the boat could be found.
Boat Recovered, Trailer Still Missing
Authorities recovered the boat from property belonging to Floyd Grindahl.
The property connected by trail to the area where Ryan Grindahl was staying.
The boat was anchored in a river, according to the complaint.
Its registration stickers had allegedly been spray-painted silver.
A can of silver spray paint was reportedly still inside the boat.
Authorities were unable to locate the missing trailer.
A later search of Grindahl’s property also failed to recover it.
Charges Filed In Roseau County
Grindahl faces felony fifth-degree controlled substance possession.
The charge falls under Minnesota Statute 152.025.
The complaint also lists a prior drug conviction from July 2025.
Grindahl also faces a gross misdemeanor theft charge.
That charge falls under Minnesota Statute 609.52.
The felony drug charge carries up to five years in prison.
It also carries a possible fine of up to $10,000.
The theft charge carries up to 364 days in jail.
It also carries a possible $1,000 fine.
The charges are allegations. Grindahl is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
