GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – Victims of a tire-slashing spree in Grand Forks will have to wait longer for compensation as a dispute over restitution arises in court. Matthew Morris, 32, who is already serving a two-year prison sentence for slashing 91 tires in October 2023, was back in court on Friday, Sept. 20. The hearing, expected to finalize restitution, took an unexpected turn when Morris’ defense challenged the amount owed.
While both sides agree on the number of slashed tires, they disagree on the restitution total. The defense argues Morris only owes $3,800, citing improper paperwork from the prosecution. Prosecutors, however, claim the total restitution should exceed $32,000, accounting for the cost of replacing full tire sets on all-wheel-drive vehicles.
Judge Jason McCarthy plans to review case law and documents before setting a new date for the hearing.
