Red Lake Incident Leads to Assault, Drug Charges

BELTRAMI COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Danny Leng Chang faces two felony charges after a July 7 disturbance on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

A Beltrami County court complaint charges Chang with felony domestic assault and fifth-degree drug possession.

Both charges carry maximum penalties of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

Officers Respond to Home Disturbance

Police were called after a woman reported a man acting aggressively toward children inside her home.

The complaint says officers found an overturned dinner table and blueberries smeared across the floor.

Chang allegedly acted erratically and tried to grab a baby from a woman’s arms.

He then allegedly threw items around the home while searching for a shoe.

The woman told officers Chang was visiting a child they share.

She said Chang had been removed from the home in November 2025.

A witness reported seeing Chang strike the young child on the head.

The witness also said Chang threw a shoe that hit the child’s face.

Officers reportedly saw the child shaking and noticed a swollen, bleeding lip.

The child is nearly three years old, according to the complaint.

Officers later served Chang with an exclusion order from the reservation.

The woman asked that Chang’s vehicle be removed from the property.

During an inventory search, officers allegedly found a glass pipe in a cup holder.

They also found a prescription bottle containing foil and a crystalline substance.

The substance tested presumptively positive for methamphetamine, according to the complaint.

It weighed 0.39 grams with packaging.

Prosecutors filed the case in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

The court file number is 04-CR-26-1576.

The domestic assault charge cites Chang’s prior qualifying domestic violence-related convictions.

Minnesota’s domestic assault law allows a felony charge after two qualifying convictions within ten years.

The drug count alleges possession of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.
