Becker County, MN (trfnews.i234.me)—On July 28, 2024, White Earth police officers arrested 39-year-old Red Eagle Goodwin of rural Bagley in Becker County on an outstanding felony warrant from Mahnomen County. Due to a possible overdose, officers transported Goodwin to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for medical evaluation. During transport, Goodwin was combative, kicking and resisting. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was handcuffed to a bed in the emergency department. Despite restraints, Goodwin continued to struggle and kicked the attending physician in the head. Following the incident, he was moved to Fargo for further medical treatment.
On October 16, a Becker County District Court judge ordered a mental competency evaluation for Goodwin. The assessment, completed on December 16, determined that he was incompetent to face the charges. Consequently, on January 17, Goodwin was released from jail for immediate six-month placement in a state facility to address mental health and chemical dependency issues.
