Polk County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A Crookston man is facing new charges in Polk County District Court after being stopped by police during a late-night patrol earlier this year.

According to the criminal complaint, Djai Dvossiai Mackatori Johnson Jr., 25, of Crookston, has been charged with gross misdemeanor driving without insurance and misdemeanor driving after revocation.

The complaint states that around 11:40 p.m. on February 12, 2025, Crookston police stopped Johnson after recognizing a vehicle previously flagged for having no insurance. A records check confirmed the driver’s license was revoked. Johnson admitted he knew his license was not valid.

When questioned about insurance, Johnson claimed he had been added to his sister’s policy days earlier but could not provide proof. After repeated requests, he acknowledged he had no evidence of coverage. Officers verified that Johnson’s license remained revoked and noted his extensive history of similar violations.

Court records show Johnson has multiple prior convictions for uninsured driving within the last five years, including cases in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. These repeat offenses elevated the current charge to a gross misdemeanor.

If convicted, Johnson faces up to one year in jail and fines of up to $3,000 for the insurance violation, along with additional penalties for driving after revocation.

Minnesota law requires all drivers to maintain valid insurance, with repeat violations resulting in harsher penalties. More information about state insurance requirements can be found through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
