Crash & Investigation Details
๐น 8:06 a.m. โ February 10, 2025: Witnesses reported seeing a white Dodge pickup truck with a red snowplow strike bicyclist Tyler Michael Spooner on the shoulder of County Highway 61 near Sandstone.
๐น The truck appeared to be using the shoulder to pass another vehicle, according to witnesses.
๐น Spooner suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to St. Maryโs Hospital in Duluth, where he died the next day.
Surveillance & Arrest
๐น Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from a Caseyโs convenience store near the crash site, which captured the suspectโs vehicle traveling eastbound at the time of the incident.
๐น A Pine County sergeant identified the truck as belonging to Eiffler, whose home was near the crash scene.
๐น Deputies found the truck at another residence in Sandstone, belonging to Eifflerโs nephew.
๐น Physical evidence on the truck included:
- A broken snowplow light
- Green paint transfer from the victimโs bicycle
- Shattered glass inside the light housing
- DNA samples collected from the steering wheel & gear shifter
Court Appearance & Bail
๐น Eiffler was arrested and charged with two counts of felony criminal vehicular homicide.
๐น He made his first court appearance on February 12, 2025.
๐น Bail was set at $50,000 unconditional, or $25,000 with conditions prohibiting him from driving or using drugs/alcohol.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and Eiffler remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
