PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) – A Park Rapids man faces a felony charge after investigators allegedly discovered he had failed to update his required predatory offender registration for approximately two months.
Douglas Alan Denio, 54, of Park Rapids, is charged with knowingly failing to comply with Minnesota’s predatory offender registration requirements.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Hubbard County District Court, investigators found Denio sleeping inside a vehicle in a former grocery store parking lot.
Compliance Check Reveals Address Discrepancy
On October 16, 2026, Hubbard County authorities conducted a compliance check involving Denio.
Investigators visited his last registered address along U.S. Highway 71.
According to court documents, they learned Denio no longer lived at that location.
Authorities received information suggesting he might be staying at the Rustic Inn in Park Rapids.
Denio was required to maintain updated registration information because of a previous criminal sexual conduct conviction.
Police Find Man Sleeping Inside Vehicle
Earlier that morning, at approximately 3:56 a.m., Park Rapids police investigated a suspicious vehicle parked outside a former Coborn’s grocery store.
Officers contacted Denio and questioned him about his registration status.
According to the complaint, Denio claimed he had registered with local law enforcement.
However, officers reportedly could not confirm that he had registered as a person without a primary address.
Denio was advised to update his registration.
At approximately 10:32 a.m., investigators returned to the parking lot and located the vehicle.
They found Denio sleeping in the passenger seat.

Man Reports Living Without Permanent Address
During questioning, Denio acknowledged that he had been without a permanent residence for approximately two months.
He reportedly told investigators he had been staying at various locations around Park Rapids.
According to court documents, Denio had not updated his registration after leaving his previous residence.
Investigators also discovered that he had a cellphone number that was not listed in his registration records.
Denio reportedly said he had been using that number for approximately two weeks.
Vehicle Information Allegedly Not Registered
Investigators asked Denio about the vehicle in which he was staying.
According to the complaint, Denio stated that he owned the vehicle and had possessed it for approximately one year.
Authorities confirmed the vehicle was registered in his name.
However, investigators reportedly found no vehicle information listed in his predatory offender registration records.
When questioned about the missing updates, Denio allegedly explained that he believed remaining in the same city meant he did not need to update his registration.
Investigators subsequently placed him under arrest.
Felony Registration Violation Filed
Minnesota law requires registered predatory offenders to report changes in their required registration information.
Under Minnesota Statute 243.166, individuals without a primary address must comply with specific reporting requirements.
Those requirements include registering with the appropriate law enforcement authority within 24 hours after losing a primary address.
Registration records must also include required vehicle and telephone information.
Denio is charged with one felony count of knowingly failing to comply with registration requirements.
A conviction carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
Hubbard County Court Case
The complaint also references previous convictions involving predatory offender registration violations.
Those earlier convictions are separate from the current allegation.
The new case is filed in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District under court file number 29-CR-26-970.
The criminal complaint lists an order of detention.
The current charge concerns alleged registration noncompliance, not a newly alleged sexual offense.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Denio is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
