One Dead, Two Injured Near U of M Shooting – Hennepin Co.

MINNEAPOLIS (trfnews.i234.me) – Police have increased patrols near the University of Minnesota after an early Saturday morning shooting left one person dead and two others injured.

Authorities say the shooting occurred around 2:38 a.m. near 13th Avenue Southeast and Fifth Street Southeast. A Minneapolis police officer reported hearing two bursts of fully automatic gunfire in the area. Officers from both the Minneapolis Police Department and the University of Minnesota Police quickly responded as part of a late-night safety plan around campus.

When officers arrived, they found two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the intersection. A third victim was located in a nearby alley behind Frank and Andrea’s Pizzeria. Police provided first aid, including CPR and tourniquet application. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to the hospital.

Officials say one of the surviving victims is a University of Minnesota student. Both survivors were initially listed in critical condition but are now expected to recover.

Investigators recovered three firearms at the scene, including a handgun found on the deceased victim. Police are now working to determine ownership of the remaining weapons and what led to the exchange of gunfire.

The Minneapolis Police Department reports that forensic teams and homicide investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, collecting evidence, and conducting interviews. Officials have requested the public’s help in providing any information about the shooting.

The shooting occurred on a busy Halloween night when thousands were out celebrating across the Dinkytown and downtown Minneapolis areas. Authorities commended officers who rushed toward the gunfire to assist victims and secure the scene.

Police confirmed that all three victims are male. The deceased individual has not yet been identified, though investigators believe he may be a teenager. The other non-student victim is a juvenile.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and University of Minnesota Police Department, are coordinating increased patrols around campus as the investigation continues.

Officials emphasized that community safety remains a top priority and urged anyone with information to contact police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Minnesota.
