Odell D. Flaagan, age 85, resident of Tolna, ND, died Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at the NCHS Care Center in McVille, ND.
Odell Donald Flaagan was born November 9, 1938 in McVille, ND, the son of Odien and Doris (Schindele) Flaagan. He was raised on the family farm near Tolna. He graduated from Tolna High School in 1956 and began farming with his dad. He served in the ND Army National Guard from 1962 until 1967. Odell married Ilyce Quam on June 27, 1964. He continued farming and also hauled cattle for local ranchers. He also worked a few years for the Nelson County Highway Department. Odell was a Nelson County Commissioner for 32 years, served in the ND Legislature for 4 terms, and also served on many local county and state boards. He had a passion for his grandchildren, farming, local government, hunting, fishing, cooking, and community. Odell worked hard lobbying for funding for county roads. He was a member of American Legion, Tolna Volunteer Fire Department, and a lifetime member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge.
Odell will be deeply missed by his wife, Ilyce Flaagan of Tolna; 3 children, Patty Sandoval of Tolna, Doug (Breun) Flaagan of Tolna, and Mike (Jodi) Flaagan of Thief River Falls, MN; 9 grandchildren, Taylor Gardner, Michael Sandoval, Kaleb Flaagan, Abigail Flaagan, Ryan Flaagan, Gage Flaagan, Riley Flaagan, Bailey Flaagan, and Trace Flaagan; 2 great grandchildren, Elana Gardner and Kalea Flaagan; 2 sisters, Janet Haugen of Chandler, AZ and Margie (Tracy) Henningsgard of Valley City, ND; mother-in-law, Alpha Quam of McVille; and several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Claire and Jerome; and 2 sisters, Kathryn Loe and Mavis Enstad.
The Funeral Service for Odell will be held at Sigdal Lutheran Church, rural Tolna, ND, on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Sigdal Church Cemetery.
