John Joseph Hagl was born March 24, 1959 in Moorhead, MN to Kenneth and Rita (Huot) Hagl. He was baptized there at St. Francis de Sales and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN where he remained a lifelong resident. In his youth, Johnny enjoyed fishing and hunting deer and grouse with his dad, Grandpa Paul, Uncle Doug, and his brother Jimmy. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1977. Upon graduation, John began working construction and carpentry jobs near and far and was well-known for his excellent sheet rocking skills. In 1989 he began dating Theresa Walsh and, in 1995, he took great pride in building their family home on Blueberry Hill in the Klondike. On June 30, 2001 John and Theresa were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
John was a simple man, an outdoorsman, who loved spending time with his family up north at the “fishin’ shack”. He enjoyed hosting a good fish fry after a successful weekend of reeling in walleyes. Papa John, as the grandkids affectionately called him, had a huge sweet tooth and spoiled his grandkids with ice cream and cinnobabies whenever they visited. He truly showed his soft side around them and loved holding babies and sneaking treats to the dogs, especially his pal Big Boy. After working construction for over 40 years, John retired from the Union in April of 2021 and was currently building a new cabin in Roosevelt for the family to enjoy.
John is survived by his loving wife Theresa Hagl and dad Kenny Hagl, both of Red Lake Falls, children Tina (Dan) Taus of Middle River, Richie (Shauna Derosier) Columbus of Morrow, OH, Seleena Navar of Bemidji, Tyler (Jenna) Hagl of Red Lake Falls, grandchildren Tamara, Michael, Walter, Vin, William, Jayden, Blake, Charlize, and Raylan, great-grandchildren Xavier and Taya, siblings Dan Hagl, Jim Hagl, Becky (Jim) Barry, Patty (Alan Cota) Berberena, and Marvin Hagl, brother-in-law Greg McGlynn, good friend Tim “Brock” Broekemeier, several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother Rita Hagl, sister Sally McGlynn, cousin Catherine Hagl, good friends Steven “Chopper” Carriere and Frank “The Pilgrim” Schmidt, several aunts and uncles.
May his memory be eternally blessed.
