BISMARCK, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – In a decisive verdict, jurors convicted Benjamin Williams, 29, of Mandan, for the murder of Christopher Sebastian, 39, in a 2022 shooting incident in Bismarck. The jury’s decision, reached after less than two hours of deliberation on Monday, could result in Williams facing life imprisonment without parole. Sentencing awaits scheduling, with Judge Cynthia Feland ordering a presentence investigation.

Trial Details

Prosecutors asserted that Williams fatally shot Sebastian on October 4, 2022, in a south Bismarck apartment complex parking lot. Despite lacking a discussed motive, circumstantial evidence proved pivotal in the conviction. Lesser offenses of manslaughter and negligent homicide were removed from jury instructions at Williams’ request. Defense attorney Stormy Vickers refrained from interference, acknowledging the gravity of the case.

Prosecution’s Case

Prosecutors outlined a timeline using surveillance video and cellphone data, illustrating Williams and Sebastian’s association prior to the shooting. Witnesses testified to hearing gunshots and spotting a figure, allegedly Williams, fleeing the scene. Forensic evidence, including DNA on a mask fastener and a discarded hoodie, supported the prosecution’s narrative. The .40-caliber Glock used in the crime was traced, though Williams’ direct handling wasn’t confirmed.

Defense and Verdict

Vickers argued against the prosecution’s case, emphasizing insufficient scientific support. However, the jury sided with the prosecution, swayed by DNA evidence and Williams’ attempt to hide incriminating items. Williams, who confessed to using fentanyl on the night of the incident, may face additional consequences for drug consumption.

The trial, which commenced on April 1, saw no defense witnesses, with Williams opting not to testify. Despite the guilty verdict, potential avenues for appeal remain open.
